What's Coming Up? Openings And Closings In Theatreland

As is the nature in the unpredictable, but rewarding, world of London theatre, many of the best shows don’t last forever. With the imminent departure of the epic musical, Miss Saigon, confirmed, many other theatres are using the coming weeks to switch their productions around.

The Almeida’s Greek season continues with Anne Carson’s new interpretation of Euripides’ Bakkhai. Starring Ben Whishaw and Bertie Carvel, Bakkhai is likely to continue in the same thread as Robert Icke’s incredibly well-received Oresteia.

Annie Jr opens at the Arts Theatre on the 3rd of August, and is an excellent opportunity to see some of the most talented kids in the business! Only an hour long, it’s also an excellent show to take some of the younger ones to over the summer holidays.

Another children’s favourite, Hetty Feather, returns to the West End following an original run at the Vaudeville Theatre in 2014. In its new home at the Duke of York’s Theatre, Jacqueline Wilson’s tale follows the life of Hetty in a foster home and has been nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Family and Entertainment Show.

Lyndsey Turner’s hyped production of Hamlet, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, opens at the Barbican on the 25th August. Whilst tickets are sold out, 30 tickets are released each day for £10, as well as day returns. With an accompanying set design by Olivier award winner Es Devlin, this is the theatrical event of the year.

The final big opener of the summer is the National Theatre’s new production of Our Country’s Good. Originating from the Royal Court, Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play is directed by Nadia Fall and is destined to be a large scale hit in the Olivier.
