The history of Matilda the Musical
Based on Roald Dahl’s beloved 1988 children’s novel, Matilda has become one of the most cherished stories in modern literature. The book’s success led to the much-loved 1996 film adaptation directed by Danny DeVito, which introduced the story to a whole new generation.
The stage musical was developed by the Royal Shakespeare Company, with a book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by comedian and composer Tim Minchin. It premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2010 before transferring to London’s Cambridge Theatre, where it has been running ever since. Today, Matilda the Musical London remains a fixture of the Matilda West End theatre scene, with tickets selling fast for every performance.
In 2022, Netflix released a star-studded film adaptation starring Emma Thompson, Stephen Graham, and Alisha Weir, which brought the story to an even wider audience. Iconic songs such as “When I Grow Up,” “Naughty,” and “Revolting Children” have become fan favourites, making Matilda the Musical tickets and Matilda London tickets some of the most sought-after in West End theatre.
